What to do in Big Bear?
Big Bear Lake has long been considered a vacation gem for Southern Californians - a four season resort high in the mountains that is just an hour's drive from the desert of Palm Springs or a two hour drive from anywhere in Southern California. The area has thick forests making it feel like areas near Lake Tahoe. But Southern California weather with over 300 days of sunshine keeps the skies over Big Bear blue most of the year - one reason that the film and television industry has used this resort area as a location backdrop for many famous productions.
The activities in and near Big Bear are limitless - if it has to do with outdoor recreation, you can probably do it at Big Bear Lake. Hiking trails are located in different locations around the lake, and bicycling is big - although, remember, you're at almost 7,000 feet of altitude. Boat rentals and water activities are available in summer. The lake is 7 ˝ miles long with 22 miles of shoreline. It is the trout fishing capital of the West.
In the winter Big Bear turns into a winter wonderland ski resort. Skiing and snowboarding are offered at Snow Summit and at Bear Mountain Resorts. Other winter sports include tubing, sledding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
The area has an unusually large selection of visitor lodgings ranging from motel-style units to million-dollar vacation homes. And for the outdoor family many camping grounds and site are available during the warm months. There are over 77 restaurants to choose from to satisfy any palate.
Fly In! Big Bear City Airport is located in the San Bernardino Mountains at the 6,748 foot elevation. It is the only airport serving the communities of Big Bear Lake, Big Bear City, Lake Arrowhead and other communities in the mountain range.
A trip to Big Bear must include a visit to the Moonridge Wild Animal Park. The animal park has 150 inhabitants and 85 different species counting 3 grizzlies bears, including one 3 legged bear named Huckleberry.
Whether you stay a day, a weekend or a week….Big Bear Lake is a get-away destination you will never forget. For location and driving instructions go to www.roundtownwithron.com.
